Modern Texas Backyard Retreat
This backyard belongs to a returning client. We designed the outdoor space at their previous home, and when they started building their new home in Garden Ridge, they brought us back before construction was even finished.
Denali Pools designed and installed the pool, while we designed the landscaping and outdoor living spaces around it. Our teams stayed in close communication throughout construction, coordinating elevations, concrete, and other details to keep things moving smoothly for the client.
The clients wanted a clean, modern look with a grey palette. We installed stained and stamped concrete throughout the patio and pool deck for a high-end look without the cost of tile. Raised stone planters around the pool were capped to match the pool coping, carrying the same finish through the space.
A custom steel pergola was fabricated for the pool deck and painted matte black, with modern horizontal railings and space planned for a future hot tub. We also installed a full stormwater drainage system to manage runoff from the gutters and neighboring property.
The side yard was designed for growing. Raised stone garden beds make vegetables and herbs easy to reach, with built-in irrigation for lower maintenance. We also planted a small vineyard for the family to grow their own grapes. A horizontal cedar privacy fence with dark-stained posts adds warmth and privacy around the backyard.
The result is a backyard that feels polished but still very personal to the family. There’s a place to swim, a shady spot to relax, vegetables and herbs growing just off the patio, and even grapes on the vine.

"Moditerranean" Outdoor Transformation in Terrell Heights
This Terrell Heights backyard is proof that a smaller space can still have a lot going on. After a new pool was installed, the homeowners were left with a torn-up yard and an opportunity to rethink the space around it. They wanted a Mediterranean feel, but one that made sense for San Antonio’s climate.
Working alongside Cody Pools, we created a landscape design for the space around the new pool using clean lines, natural stone, blue pottery, and Texas native and adapted plants. The goal was to capture the Mediterranean character the homeowners loved with plants and materials suited to South Texas.
A large-format Lueders limestone walkway creates a clean path into the backyard, with Arizona Sunset river rock and Shadow Stone adding warmer color and texture. The design also includes a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a custom Big Green Egg station, and thoughtful planning to maximize both flow and function. Timberwood Park Native Landscape
This Timberwood Park landscape design brings art and ecology together to create a space that feels alive, welcoming, and truly Texas. From the start, the homeowners wanted a native, drought-tolerant landscape that supported pollinators, conserved water, and turned their new-build property into a peaceful retreat.
Our team designed a Hill Country–inspired layout with drip-irrigated beds, river rock borders, and a hydromulched blend of Bermuda and habitat grasses for a water-smart lawn. At the back of the property, we transformed a steep, unused slope into “Pollinator Hill,” planted with Texas wildflowers, including the homeowner’s favorite, bluebonnets, to attract butterflies and bees all season long.
We also built a granite-finished seating area using salvaged stone from the site, complete with lighting for gatherings large and small.

This Regency at Esperanza project in Boerne is one of several outdoor transformations we’ve completed in this community, where we’ve handled the full design and build from start to finish.

This Timberwood Park family already had a pool, but the rest of the backyard wasn't giving them much reason to stay outside. Beyond swimming, they rarely used it. The yard was a mix of scattered plants, rocks, old tree stumps, and grass, without a comfortable place for the kids to play or for the family to simply spend time together. They wanted to turn it into a backyard that worked for everyday life, not just pool days.
We designed the space to feel more like a series of outdoor rooms, each with its own purpose while still feeling connected. A seating area with a fire pit and Shadow Stone gives them a place to gather, while a pergola creates shade for meals and morning coffee. Raised planters make room for vegetables and flowers to cut and bring inside, and tropical landscaping adds a lush backdrop around the pool. One of the simplest changes has also made one of the biggest differences: a healthy stretch of natural grass where the kids can run, play, and set up a volleyball net. Now the pool is just one part of the backyard. The family is outside every day, eating together, having coffee, gardening, playing volleyball, sitting by the fire, or just enjoying a yard that finally feels like part of their home.

Large concrete pads with turf joints create a clean transition between the house, pool, patios, and custom pavilion. The pavilion adds plenty of covered space for cooking and entertaining, with a full outdoor kitchen and bar seating. VHS also designed the pool and worked with Cody Pools on its construction.

To give “Dottie,” the family’s Airstream, a proper home, we poured a custom concrete driveway designed to match the look of the walkway. Though it appears segmented, it’s actually a monolithic pour built for durability and long-term strength. This project involved an extensive roof tie-in to seamlessly extend their patio into a spacious sunroom featuring a 8-foot doors and high ceilings. When these homeowners built their new home on an acre in Pecan Springs, the house was finished but the landscape was basically a blank slate. We worked through several ideas together, weighing the pros and cons of each, then designed the property to feel softer, more established, and connected from front to back.
One of our favorite details is the flagstone stepping path that winds through the lawn from the driveway toward the house and continues the relaxed feel into the backyard. Curving landscape beds bring in layers of ornamental grasses, agaves, flowering Texas-adapted plants, and plenty of color while working with the mature oaks already on the property. Instead of competing with the clean lines and limestone exterior of the home, the landscaping softens them.
Out back, we added more pathways to connect the different parts of the property, along with a fire pit gathering area and overhead string lights for evenings outside. The result feels full without feeling overly landscaped, with plenty to look at as you move through the yard and room for the landscape to keep getting better as it grows in.

Instead of competing with the clean lines and limestone exterior of the home, the landscaping softens them.
Out back, we added more pathways to connect the different parts of the property, along with a fire pit gathering area and overhead string lights for evenings outside. The result feels full without feeling overly landscaped, with plenty to look at as you move through the yard and room for the landscape to keep getting better as it grows in.
Terraced Backyard Hardscaping
We transformed an unusable, sloped backyard into a functional space by adding three terraced levels: a top tier for perennial planting, a middle vegetable garden, and a lower grassy lawn perfect for family enjoyment. To complete this family's outdoor space, we also designed and built a custom pergola to provide shade and privacy.
