Grow Something That Lasts
VHS Outdoor Living designs and installs landscapes for San Antonio homeowners. Our work includes full front and backyard renovations, planting bed design and installation, sod and native lawn installation, soil preparation and amendment, weed suppression, and plant selection for the unique conditions of your yard. We've been designing and installing landscapes in San Antonio since 1999, with plant and material selections based on what works in our soil and climate.

Thirty Years of San Antonio Soil Under Our Boots
We've worked rocky Hill Country lots, heavy clay neighborhoods, mature landscapes, new construction, and everything in between. Every project has taught us something.
San Antonio can give you limestone a few inches below the surface in one neighborhood and heavy clay in another. Add intense summer heat, unpredictable rain, occasional freezes, deer, mature live oaks, and different amounts of sun from one side of a house to the other, and there isn't one planting palette that works everywhere.
Nearly 30 years of building landscapes here has taught us what tends to perform, what struggles, and what questions to ask before we ever break ground. A beautiful yard is built one good decision at a time.
Dig a Little Deeper
A lot of landscaping problems can be traced back to what happened before the plants ever went in. San Antonio soil can be tough, and even a great plant will struggle if the soil, sun, drainage, or location aren't right for it.
We spend a lot of time on the part you won't see when the project is finished. We amend the soil on most projects, address weeds where needed, and choose plants based on the conditions in your yard. We also think about how big those plants will get and how much maintenance they'll need as they mature.
The payoff is a yard that settles in and gets better with time. Plants have room to grow into the space, beds stay manageable, and the landscape looks more established as it matures.

Follow the Sun
Morning sun and late-afternoon sun can be two very different things in San Antonio. We look at when and how long an area gets sun, not just whether it's labeled “sun” or “shade.”
Leave Room to Grow
That shrub isn't staying nursery-size. We plan for mature height and width so plants have room to fill in without crowding walkways, covering windows, or competing for space.
Don't Plant a Buffet
If deer regularly visit your yard, plant selection changes. We can prioritize plants they're less likely to browse, while being realistic that no plant is completely deer-proof.
Plan for the Upkeep
Low maintenance means different things to different people. We consider how much pruning, cleanup, watering, and general upkeep you want when deciding what belongs in the plan.

Start-to-finish landscape installation for front yards, backyards, or both. We evaluate what can stay, remove what needs to go, prepare the site, and install the new landscape as one complete project.
Complete Yard Renovations
Defined beds with the right soil mix, weed suppression, edging, and plant selections that work together as a cohesive design. We create beds that look intentional and stay manageable.
Planting Bed Design and Installation
Professionally installed sod with the soil preparation, grading, and irrigation considerations handled before it goes down.
Sod Installation
For larger lots and acreage where a conventional lawn doesn't make sense, Habiturf is a native seed mix developed specifically for Central Texas. It establishes into a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant lawn that looks natural rather than manicured.
Habiturf and Native Lawn Installation
Weed control isn't one-size-fits-all. We use fabric or other suppression methods where they're appropriate for the bed, ground cover, and long-term maintenance plan.
Weed Suppression
We amend soil on most landscape projects. That may mean adding organic matter or making other improvements before plants or sod go in.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Do you keep any of my existing plants? Yes. We evaluate what's in the ground before recommending what stays or goes. Healthy established plants, especially trees and large shrubs, are almost always worth keeping. We'll tell you honestly what's worth saving and what isn't.
How long does a landscaping installation take? Most residential landscaping projects take between three and ten days depending on scope, plant availability, and site conditions. We give you a clear timeline in the project proposal before work begins.
How do I keep it looking good after you leave? We walk you through post-install care. New plants need consistent watering during their establishment period, typically the first one to two growing seasons. After that, a well-planned landscape needs significantly less intervention. We'll tell you what your yard needs, not just hand you a generic care sheet.
Do you work in HOA neighborhoods? Yes. We are familiar with common HOA requirements across San Antonio and can help you plan a landscape that meets your HOA's guidelines. If you have specific HOA restrictions, bring them to the consultation.
