Artificial turf can be a great answer for the part of your yard where grass has officially given up. It can also be an expensive answer to the wrong problem.

Before we recommend turf, we look at why natural grass isn't working, how the area will be used, drainage, sun, pets and what else is happening in the yard.

What Does Artificial Turf Cost in San Antonio?

For planning purposes, smaller turf installations may fall around $4,000 to $9,000, medium projects around $9,000 to $20,000, and larger installations can reach $20,000 to $40,000 depending on the area and site conditions. The turf itself is only part of the installation. Removal, excavation, base preparation, drainage, edging, seams and access all affect the final cost.

Where Turf Works Well

Turf can make sense in shaded areas where grass struggles, around pools, in compact play areas, in dog runs and in parts of the yard where you want a consistently usable surface without mowing or irrigation. We also use it as one piece of a larger landscape. A smaller turf area surrounded by planting, stone and hardscape can give you the function of a lawn without turning the entire backyard into one big green rectangle.

The Pros

Artificial turf stays green, doesn't need mowing and reduces the irrigation needed for that part of the yard. It handles regular foot traffic well and can create a clean surface in places where natural grass has trouble establishing.

The Cons

Turf gets hot in direct Texas sun. It also has an upfront cost that is much higher than installing sod, and it isn't maintenance-free. Leaves, debris and pet areas still need attention. It also shouldn't be used to hide a drainage problem. The base and drainage underneath the turf matter just as much as what you see on top.

What About Dogs?

Turf can work very well for pets when the product, base and drainage are selected with pets in mind. That means planning for how liquid moves through the surface and how the area will be cleaned. If the dog is the main client, we design for the dog. They may not be paying the invoice, but they will definitely be reviewing the finished product.

Why Installation Matters

Good turf should look like it belongs in the yard. Proper grading, a stable base, clean seams, thoughtful edges and good drainage make a major difference in how it looks and performs over time. This is one of those projects where a lot of the important work disappears when the installation is finished.

Is Artificial Turf Worth It?

It can be, especially when it solves a specific problem and gives you usable space you didn't have before. We don't think every square foot of lawn needs to become turf, and we'll tell you when another solution makes more sense.
