Understanding Your $25,000–$50,000 Outdoor Living Budget
Updated: Sep 9
Creating a beautiful outdoor space can be a thrilling journey. At VHS Outdoor Living, we understand that homeowners often wonder where to start when it comes to budgeting for outdoor projects. Let’s break down what you can expect within the $25,000–$50,000 range.
The Basics of Your Budget
Most full outdoor living projects at VHS start around $25,000. This isn’t just a random number; it reflects the reality of high-quality materials, skilled labor, and a thorough process that ensures everything is done right.
At the lower end of this range, you might focus on one well-executed feature. At the upper end, you can combine two or three elements to create a cohesive outdoor environment. Neither option is better; it all depends on your property’s needs and how you envision using the space.
What This Budget Doesn’t Cover
If you’re dreaming of a resort-style backyard complete with a covered outdoor kitchen, a plunge pool, landscape lighting, and a complete landscape overhaul, that’s a different conversation. It’s crucial to be clear about your budget from the start. This way, you won’t fall in love with a project that doesn’t fit your financial plan.
What $25,000–$35,000 Typically Looks Like
In this range, you can make significant improvements to your outdoor space. Here are some common projects that fall within this budget:
A Well-Built Covered Patio
A freestanding or attached patio cover in the $25,000–$35,000 range includes a properly engineered structure, quality roofing material, ceiling fans, recessed lighting, and a finished look that integrates seamlessly with your home’s architecture. However, this budget does not cover outdoor kitchens or extensive landscaping—those are add-ons that can increase the overall cost.
Factors that influence the price include the size of the footprint, ceiling height, roofing material, electrical complexity, and the level of detail required to match your home’s existing style.

A Focused Landscape Renovation
If your yard needs attention, a budget of $25,000–$35,000 can cover meaningful transformations. This might include bed renovations, new plant materials, some hardscaping, and drainage corrections. While it won't cover every corner of your yard, it will focus on the areas that matter most.
A Drainage and Grading Project Combined with Entry-Level Hardscape
Some properties require foundational work before any aesthetic improvements can be made. If you’re dealing with standing water, erosion, or grading issues affecting your foundation or landscape, addressing these first is essential. A budget of $25,000–$35,000 can cover comprehensive drainage work along with a patio extension or basic hardscape without compromising either element.
What $35,000–$50,000 Typically Looks Like
In this range, you can start combining elements to create a more complete outdoor living environment.

A Covered Patio with an Outdoor Kitchen
This is one of our most popular project types in this range. A well-built covered structure with an outdoor kitchen, grill, countertop, and possibly a side burner and refrigerator can be constructed for $35,000–$50,000. The final cost will depend on the size, appliance selections, and countertop materials.
Factors that influence the price include the brand of the grill, the type of countertop material, and whether you’re adding a sink and plumbing. A built-in pizza oven or a full outdoor bar layout can push the cost toward the upper end of this range or beyond.
A Covered Patio Plus Landscape Work
If your patio project is simpler and your yard needs significant attention, this budget allows you to address both. You can achieve a solid patio cover along with bed renovations, new plant materials, edging, and drainage work. This approach helps your yard feel cohesive rather than a construction zone with a new roof on one end.
A Significant Landscape Transformation
For larger properties ready for a full reset, a budget of $35,000–$50,000 can cover a complete landscape installation. This includes new planting beds designed for the South Texas climate, quality plant materials suited for your specific soil and sun conditions, turf or ground cover where appropriate, edging, mulch, and irrigation to keep everything thriving through the hot San Antonio summer.
Maximizing Your $25,000–$50,000 Budget
After building hundreds of projects in this range, we’ve learned a few key strategies to help you make the most of your budget.
Define Your Space’s Purpose
Before diving into design, think about how you’ll use the space. A family that loves to grill and dine outdoors three nights a week will have different priorities than someone seeking a low-maintenance yard that looks great from inside. Both are valid; your project should reflect your actual lifestyle, not an idealized version of it.
Don’t Skip the Drainage
If your property has drainage issues and your budget is tight, you might be tempted to skip the drainage work in favor of visible elements. However, this often leads to higher costs in the long run. Addressing foundational issues first is crucial before finishing the surface elements.
Quality Over Complexity
A single, well-built covered patio that you use regularly is worth more than a sprawling project filled with materials that fail and workmanship that doesn’t hold up. We’ll guide you if a proposed scope is trying to do too much for your budget.
How the VHS Process Works
Your $50 consultation begins with a real site visit. Chris or Sean will walk your property, evaluate drainage, understand your goals, and provide an honest preliminary budget range. If we’re not in the right ballpark for your vision, we’ll let you know during the consultation rather than waste your time with a proposal that doesn’t fit.
If we proceed, your project proposal will be itemized line by line—no surprises. The scope and pricing are locked in at contract signing. If you want to make changes mid-project, that will be documented as a change order. The only thing that alters your total is a decision you make.
Most clients in this budget range opt for the Design + Build path. By committing to move forward, we collect a 10% project retainer, allowing design development to begin. This approach gets you into the installation queue faster than waiting for finalized plans before committing.
Once construction wraps up, if your project includes plants, irrigation, a water feature, or a fire feature, we return for a Well Check. A consultant will walk the site, test the systems, check the plant material, and ensure everything is functioning as it should.
Your backyard should be a place where your family genuinely wants to spend time. This budget can help create that space. Let’s discuss what your specific project looks like.
