Still Loving Their Yard: A Year Later in Northern Hills

There’s something especially nice about hearing from a client long after the last truck has left. The Wells family recently sent us a note with some news: their front yard was named Northern Hills Yard of the Month.

And while we’re always happy to see one of our landscapes get a little neighborhood recognition, this was the part of their email that meant the most:

“We couldn’t have done it without your help. It’s been over a year and we are still in love with our outdoor spaces.”

That’s exactly what we want to hear a year later.

A Yard Designed for San Antonio

When we worked with the Wells family, the goal wasn’t simply to make the front of the house look better. We wanted the landscape to make sense for the property and for our San Antonio climate.

The finished landscape uses a mix of plants, stone, gravel and groundcover to create texture and interest without relying on a traditional lawn. The large existing tree remains a major part of the design, giving the yard shade, scale and a sense that the new landscape belongs there.

The Part You Don’t See on Installation Day

Installation day isn’t really the test. Plants grow. Seasons change. San Antonio gets hot. Really hot. And homeowners have to live with all the decisions that were made during the design process. That’s why we put so much thought into what goes where. Plant selection, sun exposure, drainage, irrigation, mature size and maintenance all matter long after a project is finished.

More than a year later, the Wells’ landscape has filled in beautifully. And judging by the new sign in their front yard, we aren’t the only ones who think so.

Good Design Should Get Better With Time

One of the best parts of revisiting a landscape is seeing it become less “new.”

Plants fill the spaces they were given. Groundcovers spread. The landscape settles in around the house. What started as a plan begins to look like it has always belonged there.

That’s what we want for the yards we design and build.

So congratulations to the Wells family on their Yard of the Month win. And thank you for sending us the update. Seeing the sign was fun. Hearing that you’re still in love with your outdoor spaces was even better.
