Patio & Hardscape Installation in San Antonio, TX

Built From the Ground Up

Let's Take It Outside

VHS Outdoor Living designs and installs patios, walkways, patio covers, and hardscape elements for homeowners across San Antonio, Boerne, Helotes, Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, and surrounding communities. We work in flagstone, natural stone, pavers, and concrete, from ground-level patios and walkways to covered outdoor living spaces. We've been building hardscapes in San Antonio since 1999.

More Reasons to Stay Outside

A patio changes how you use your yard. Morning coffee, dinner outside, a table full of friends, or just a comfortable place to sit.

Materials aren't chosen on looks alone. We consider where the patio sits, how much sun it gets, drainage, existing trees, maintenance, budget, and how you want to use the space. A pool surround may need something different from a shaded dining patio, and a yard full of mature live oaks brings a different set of considerations altogether.

If we're adding a patio cover, we also consider sun direction, the house, and how you'll use the space when deciding its placement and design. And because San Antonio gets intense rain events, every hardscape we build is graded and planned for drainage so water moves off the surface and away from the structure.

We Lay the Groundwork

A hardscape that lasts starts with what's underneath it. We handle site prep, base compaction, and drainage planning before any material goes down because a beautiful patio that shifts, cracks, or floods after the first heavy rain isn't a finished project.

What every installation includes:

  • Site assessment and design

  • Grading and drainage planning

  • Base prep and compaction

  • Material selection guidance

  • Installation of hardscape surfaces and elements

  • Edge finishing and cleanup

  • For covered structures: permitting coordination, structural installation, and finishing

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Make Room

A 12-foot patio sounds plenty big until the furniture goes in. We plan for the table, chairs, grill, and room to move, not just the square footage.

Mind the Trees

Mature trees can provide great shade, but roots, canopy, and long-term tree health may affect the material and construction method we recommend.

Think Ahead

Want a kitchen or cover eventually? Planning for it now can save you from cutting into a finished patio later to add utilities or structural elements.

Follow the Water

Every new hard surface changes how water moves through a yard. We account for the grade and existing drainage before deciding how the patio should sit.

Work that Lasts

Patios for South Texas Yards

Natural flagstone installed over a poured concrete base. You get the solid foundation of concrete with the character and variation of natural stone. It's one of our most popular patio combinations and gives the finished space a distinctly South Texas look.

Concrete + Flagstone

Interlocking concrete pavers in a wide range of styles, patterns, and colors. Pavers are durable, easy to repair if a section ever needs attention, and offer more design flexibility than poured concrete alone. A strong choice for patios, walkways, and pool surrounds.

Manufactured Pavers

A traditional poured surface finished in several ways depending on the look you want. Practical, durable, and the right call for certain applications. We'll tell you honestly when concrete is the better fit and when it isn't.

Poured Concrete

Permeable surfaces allow water to pass through and into the soil below rather than running off. A good fit around established trees, in areas where drainage needs extra consideration, or when you want a softer, more natural transition between patio and landscape.

Permeable Patios

Natural flagstone set on a base of shadow stone or crushed granite. The stone sits in place without mortar, which keeps water moving through the surface. A popular option for yards with established live oaks where root health matters.

Loose Laid Flagstone

Crushed natural stone surface. One of the more budget-friendly options, with good drainage and a clean, natural look. It works well for casual seating areas, garden paths, and transitional spaces between hardscape and planting beds.

What Does a Patio Cost in San Antonio?

  • Patio Extension — Starting at $5,000

  • Entertainment Patio — Starting at $15,000

  • Large Outdoor Living Patio — Starting at $40,000

Pricing depends on square footage, material selection, site conditions, and the amount of preparation required. A simple ground-level patio on a relatively flat, accessible site is a different project from a large stone patio that requires grading, retaining, steps, or extensive base work. Patio covers and shade structures are priced separately.

What moves the price:

  • Square footage of hardscape area

  • Material selection (flagstone, pavers, concrete)

  • Site prep and base work required

  • Slope and drainage complexity

  • Custom elements (seat walls, steps, built-ins)

Just Need a Patio?

We can do that too.

You don’t have to be redoing the whole backyard to build a better place to sit outside. If a patio or hardscape project is the main thing you need, it may be a good fit for our streamlined Quick Projects process.

Learn About Quick Projects

What's the difference between flagstone, pavers, and concrete and how do I choose? Each has real advantages depending on your goals. Flagstone is natural and fits the Hill Country aesthetic well. Pavers are durable and offer more pattern flexibility. Concrete is practical for certain applications and can be finished in multiple ways. We'll walk you through the tradeoffs during the consultation based on your site, budget, and how you plan to use the space.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Do I need a patio cover on the same project, or can I add one later? You can build the patio and cover together or add a cover later. If you know a cover may be in your future, let us know during the design process. We can plan the patio layout and any necessary structural considerations now so you're not undoing finished work later.

How does slope affect the project cost? Slope adds complexity. A significantly sloped site requires more base work, retaining elements, or step systems to create a level usable surface. We assess this during the consultation and account for it in the proposal.

Can you add an outdoor kitchen or lighting to the same project? Yes. These are easier and more cost-effective to integrate when planned alongside the hardscape. Conduit, gas lines, and drainage rough-in happen before the surface goes down.
